Meet Brian

"In December 2018, in a small rural shopping center, three children were scavenging for food. Their parents had abandoned them. This left Brian, the oldest of the children, to assume the roles of father and mother. Under Brian’s care was also his elderly grandfather. The 9-year-old boy held a huge burden on his shoulders as head of the family, constantly cooking and looking for food and water. Protecting his siblings cost him greatly. His clothes were extremely dirty, he couldn’t bathe often, and his body was weak. When we met Brian, it was evident that he and his siblings had not eaten a meal for some time. He was malnourished, but when asked about the possibility of attending school, there was a wide grin on his face."

Brian's Progress

On 3rd January, 2019, Sikizana gave Brian, Shadrack (brother), and Jackline (sister) a new year of possibility. They were admitted to the rescue center and immediately enrolled in school. Brian quickly caught up with learning, school life, and the brotherhood at Sikizana. He no longer had to worry about feeding and clothing himself and his siblings. Instead, he focused on learning, only possible with a loving environment,  home, and family. For a year at Sikizana Trust, Brian received psychosocial support to accept and outgrow his past. He even spent time learning English on zoom with his sponsor. Seven years later, Brian is now enrolled in 10th grade in a new school and will be pursuing a career in science and technology.
